Kim Rhoney Workshops

Updated January 4, 2026

Come to my place!
I would love to share my Milan, Michigan, home studio with you. The small size of my at-home workshop ensures individual attention, and every group is an amazing community. Having a wide variety of student levels in my workshops is not unusual. Whether you are a complete newbie or an experienced painter looking to experiment with new processes and materials, or would like to advance your skills, we can create a unique experience for you.

The workshop fee includes all materials, tools, lunch, and beverages. Lunch is usually artist-made soup or a sandwich, and salad. A vegetarian option will be available. I provide coffee, tea, and water throughout the day. Feel free to bring your preferred beverage.

March workshop dates are listed below. Additional dates are pending my show schedule. Advance payment is required at the time of registration.

Working Color - putting theory into practice
Friday, March 6, 2026
10 am - 4 pm
$160.00

This workshop was created at the request of students who want to improve their ability to mix colors with intention and accuracy. I believe the facility for creating color is best learned and remembered through action. You won’t have to remember the exact recipe if you can gain an understanding of the principles that will get you there. While you can watch videos or read books, the most efficient path to mastery is creating, adjusting, and juxtaposing colors in real-time as you work.

In this session, we will put the basics of color theory into practice. You will learn how to:
Lighten colors effectively (hint: white isn't always the best choice!).
Darken tones without relying on black.
Create sophisticated neutrals without ending up with "mud" and wasting paint.

What You’ll Create: Students will produce a reference work product to preserve the specific colors you’ve mixed, followed by a small painting to put those colors into practice. Our subject will provide the perfect opportunity to apply warm and cool tones, shadows, lights, and neutrals.
